New paper in the highly rated IEEE Transactions of Biomedical Engineering selected for the Featured Papers section of the issue

The paper "Diagnosis of skin vascular complications revealed by time-frequency analysis and laser Doppler spectrum decomposition" was published in the highly rated IEEE Transactions of Biomedical Engineering journal (Q1, IF = 4,538, SJR = 1,298) by E.A. Zherebtsov, I.O. Kozlov, V.V. Dremin and A.V. Dunaev in an international team of authors.
The work focuses on new approaches to signal processing in laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and obtaining new diagnostic parameters. It is known that the perfusion index, the main registered parameter in this method, is calculated by integrating the product of the photocurrent power spectrum by the corresponding frequencies and is proportional to the average concentration and velocity of RBC in the diagnostic volume. This work proposes to use the characteristics of signal distribution by Doppler broadening frequencies before integration and on their basis to improve the diagnostic significance of LDF.

The proposed algorithms were tested to study the effect of probe pressure on the skin and during occlusion tests in conditionally healthy volunteers. Clinical tests of the method were carried out involving patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The work shows a significant improvement in the diagnostic significance of the method compared to traditional algorithms of LDF signal processing in the analysis of pathological changes in blood microcirculation in the feet of patients before the manifestation of ulcers and soft tissue necrosis.
The work of colleagues was highlighted by the editors of the journal and selected for the Feature Article section of this issue, including the most promising articles of particular interest to readers, and it confirms the significance of the results obtained.
